Are Truvia and Stevia the same?

Truvia is not the same as stevia. Stevia leaf extract is a key ingredient in Truvia sweeteners, and each delicious taste contains purified extract made from the best-tasting parts of the stevia plant.

Truvia Sweetener Ingredients

Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener in packet, spoonable jar and spoonable refill form contains three ingredients: erythritol, stevia leaf extract and natural flavors.

Stevia leaf extract is born from the sweet leaves of the stevia plant. To extract the plant’s intense sweetness, stevia leaves are harvested and dried. The leaves are then steeped in hot water. The resulting liquid extract is filtered, purified, and dried, resulting in the crystalized stevia leaf extract. Over 200 times sweeter than sugar, stevia leaf extract is the primary sweetening ingredient in Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener.

Monk Fruit extract is the high purity extract that comes from monk fruit, which may be used as a sweetening ingredient in foods, beverages, or tabletop sweeteners. It’s about 200 times sweeter than sugar.

Natural flavors are used as an ingredient in Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener and Truvia Liquid Sweeteners. Like pepper, salt or any other spice that would be used to heighten the taste of food, natural flavors are used to bring out the best in Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener and Truvia Liquid Sweeteners. While we can’t share what our natural flavors are, we can share they are derived from natural sources.

Erythritol is the largest ingredient in Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener by weight, and is used as an ingredient to provide bulk and the sugar-like crystalline appearance and texture for Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener. The erythritol used in Truvia Calorie-Free Sweetener is produced through a fermentation process. Fermentation is the process by which an organism metabolizes or “digests” one or more food sources to produce a desired product. Fermentation occurs in a variety of different foods given the right conditions and is used to produce wine, beer and yogurt. In the case of erythritol, a yeast digests a simple sugar called dextrose and other nutrients and produces erythritol. After fermentation, the erythritol is filtered and dried into crystals. Erythritol is found in a variety of fruits, such as grapes and pears. You can learn more about the role erythritol plays in diet and nutrition at thesweetreality.com.

Truvia Liquid Sweeteners are made without erythritol in order to create a quick-dissolving version of our deliciously sweet stevia sweeteners

Chicory root fiber is a sourced fructan from the chicory root. Fructans occur in foods such as agave, artichokes, asparagus, chicory, leeks, garlic, onions, and wheat.

Stevia leaf extract is more than 200 times sweeter than sugar so only a small amount is needed.

Truvia Sweet Complete Brown Sweetener is NSF certified non-GMO and made from stevia leaf extract, erythritol, and molasses.

Molasses is added to Truvia Sweet Complete Brown Sweetener with a Hint of Molasses to add the rich, warm flavor that is found in traditional brown sugar. Molasses in both brown sugar and Truvia Sweet Complete Brown sweetener also adds moisture to recipes such as cookies and other baked goods.

As with almost all finished food products, the journey from field to table involves some processing. The sweet components of the stevia leaf need to be extracted from the leaf, like vanilla needs to be extracted from vanilla beans. The erythritol in Truvia is made from a fermentation process. Like in other finished foods, including sugar, processing aids suitable for use in food are used in the production of both stevia leaf extract and erythritol. These aids help either extract, isolate or purify components of the ingredients. Under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations, our processing aids are not subject to labeling requirements because they have no technical or functional effect in the finished food and because they are either not present or are present at only insignificant levels in the finished product. You can learn more about the processes involved in utilizing erythritol at thesweetreality.com.
